Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

New animal legislation could go further

15 July 2004 ~ 11:34

It is great news that legislation has been passed in the UK to give animals better protection. It will now be illegal to sell pets to anyone under 16, and there are more rights for circus animals and wild creatures.

However, I agree with the RSPCA that the new laws do not go nearly far enough. I think 18 would have been a better age limit for obtaining pets. (After all, if you are not considered mature enough to vote at 17, why should you be able to be responsible for another living creature?) The docking of dogs' tails for cosmetic reasons is also not to be outlawed.

I vehemently disagree with tail docking just as much as I do the declawing of cats. It is just plain wrong to remove part of an animal's body for no good reason. Imagine the outcry if babies routinely had their appendix removed! Yes, they can live without it, but that doesn't make it right.

At least it is a move in the right direction and proves people are hopefully beginning to see animals and birds as the fellow inhabitants of this Earth, not just commodities to be used and abused.
