Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Three cheers for French animal rights campaigners

07 December 2004 ~ 16:45

We have just returned from another long weekend in Nice, France. As always, we had a great time with temps in the mid 60s and strong sunshine, despite the initial forecast of rain. What really gladdened my heart on this trip, though, was the evidence I saw that animal rights are very much alive and well in France.

Outside the five-star Negresco Hotel, the most famous and luxurious accommodation in Nice, was a huge billboard protesting the barbarity of bull fighting and urging an end to it. The Negresco itself must have either arranged or agreed to let the billboard be put up in front of their establishment, which is astonishing in itself, given that in the UK, big businesses are hardly known for championing animal causes.

Of course bull fighting is a Spanish practice. In the south of France they have bull fighting but they do not kill the bull. Nonetheless, the French obviously do not only protest other countries being cruel to animalsfor a big poster had been stuck up right beside an ATM declaring the barbarity of fois gras. It had graphic pictures of geese being force-fedevery bit as sickening as the image of a dying bull, bleeding and on its knees.

Last time we were in Nice, Mark, Mum & I came across a group of people on the Promenade des Anglais collecting petitions against animal cosmetic testing. They were urging people to buy their cosmetics and toiletries from The Body Shop.

God Bless those particular French who take animal welfare seriously. Not only do they love their dogs, but they have deep concerns over the way we treat our fellow creaturesregardless of politicsas should any right-thinking people.
