Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

God Bless you Fudgey

31 December 2006 ~ 16:08

Mark & I just got back from the vets after having Fudgey put to sleep. She had been fine until a few days ago when it became apparant that she could no longer hold food in her hands, so we fed her soft foods, but she couldn't sit up. Today she seemed worse, her eyes all crusted over and barely moving so we thought euthanasia was the kindest option. The vet said she was dehydrated but couldn't find any lumps. I guess she was just suffering from old age and possible organ failure. She was two years four months.

We got Fudge, a black hooded ratty, as a two year old with two young rats. She had been kept in a small hamster cage next to another male rat, also in a hamster cage, both alone and unnamed. My friend now has Caradoc the boy. We always gave Fudge as much love as possible to make up for her previous life without any. We know she loved us and she was bruxing even while waiting to see the vet (bruxing is the rat equivalent of purring, where rats grind their teeth and bulge their eyes in and out).

We're so glad we knew Fudge and had her as part of our lives, however short.
