Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Gerbil joy

15 March 2006 ~ 12:40

Well right now Mark & I are taking care of two female gerbils for our friend Dan. Their names are Ash and Satin and they are great little critters.

Ash is white with black mixed in, creating a grey effect, hence her name, and Satin is agouti (the black, brown, yellow mix colour of wild rats and rabbits).

They are used to being kept in a tank and now we have 'em in a wire cage, they are having great fun chewing the bars! They are also much fussier about food than our rat Autumn. The only treats they'll take are the occasional raisin, sunflower seed or nut.

They are very quick moving around and for this reason we haven't had them running around yet although we will probably try it this weekend. We've had them out for cuddles though. Their faces are so sweet with their big black almond eyes. They remind me of tiny squirrels. And they smell very musky unlike rats. A bit like ferrets do actually.

We are looking after them until 1st April and we'll miss them when they go!
