Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Keep your promise, Mr. Blair

03 July 2003 ~ 10:56

When the Labour Party were campaigning for the election in 1997, they promised they would ban fox hunting. They said it might not be during their first term because it was not a priority. Yet here we are, in the partys second term in power, with a 209 majority vote to ban the barbaric pastime, and ministers are said to be in retreat.

Even Prime Minister Tony Blairs spokesman was unable to say whether he would support the ban.

The House of Lords, that load of old codgers and fuddy-duddies, looks likely to defeat the vote. The Government has the power to force the ban, though it now looks doubtful if they will.

Put your money where your mouth is, Mr. Blair, and if the Lords defy you, abolish them. Nobody voted for them. As far as I am concerned, they should have no say in the matter.
