Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Equal rights for Royal women

25 May 2003 ~ 17:46

The traditional preference for a male monarch is set to end. The Fabian Society, an advisory body to the Government, has recommended that the eldest child, rather than the eldest male, should be heir to the throne. This means that should Prince Williams first child be a girl, she would become Queen regardless of any subsequent brothers. Such changes in legislation have already taken place in other European countries.

I agree wholeheartedly with the proposal. In the 21st century, it would be preposterous to carry on the male preference and I have always felt that though the monarchy should stayit is, for one, a huge tourist attractionbut that it needs to move with the times.

Other recommendations include the separation of monarch and church, and a slimming down of the civil list (taxpayers money awarded to the Royals). The whole idea is to make our royal family more like that of other European countrieslargely a tradition and symbol of government rather than an actual power.

For once, a sensible proposal by the Government. God Save the Queen!
