Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Police dogs need protection too

31 January 2005 ~ 02:04

Tonight I was watching 'The World's Wildest Police Videos' and was very saddened when they featured the story or A-ron, a police dog who was shot and killed by a criminal. The police held a huge funeral in honour of his bravery because he had saved the life of his handler.

However, big funerals are one thing, but what I want to know iswhy was this dog put in danger in the first place?

Were the human officers wearing bullet-proof vests? You bet your bottom dollar they were. But no vest for the poor, unarmed dog, completely vunerable to a criminal who'll do anything to get away, even if it means killing an animal.

I'm sure it would be possible to design a bullet-proof doggy jacket, and it makes sense too, because police dogs take a lot of time and money to train. Even if the police won't pay for the jackets, I'm sure animal charities would be willing to put up the money for it.

The cost of A-ron's funeral must have been pretty high. A more fitting tribute might have been to develop a protective vest for dogs so that other police dogs are less likely to follow the same fate.
