Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

An update on Sky

14 January 2003 ~ 09:42

Sky is doing really well settling in to her new home. She is a very outgoing, feisty little character. As soon as the breeder handed her to me I knew we'd get on really well. Unlike our two other girls, Stella and Luna, she doesn't mind being handled. Which means plenty of kisses and cuddles.

She really is a beautiful rat, the colour of a Russian Blue cat. She has three little white spots on her belly and white gloves and socks on her hands and feet. She's happy to perch on our shoulders or have her tummy tickled.

The sweetest thing when I went to collect her was listening to her 'laugh' with a bat detector. This can pick up high pitched sounds not discernable to the human ear. As she was tickled, with the detector you could hear her chirps which is rat laughter. Even as the hand was coming down, just like a baby she giggled in anticipation. It was so cute.

As soon as we got home we put all three rats on the bed together. Sky was actually more interested in getting to know the others than they were in getting to know her! She ran around after them, sniffing them. She is one nosy critter!

I can't deny there was some scuffling at first, and still is occasionally. All to do with dominance. Plus there's some sexual tension. Sky, little pipsqueak that she is, actually mounts the others (mock mating is common among females.) Needless to say, they don't like it. But it just goes to show she ain't afraid of them.

So now the 'three amigos' sleep curled up together in their plastc igloo, happy as larry. And to think I was worried Sky would be terrified of them!
