Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Sky: A tribute

10 September 2004 ~ 12:38

That terrible day has arrived. Sky is no longer with us. We had to have her put to sleep on Sunday 5th September after it became clear that she was very distressed and wasnt going to get any better.

I think the surgery to remove the lump might have triggered pneumonia because of the stress (maybe wearing the Elizabethan collar for 2 days upset her too muchdamn thingshe didnt chew the stitches anyway).

We ended up rushing her to the vets Friday night (September 3rd) as she was gasping for breath, and even putting her in the oxygen tank didnt help. They administered an injection of the antibiotic Synulox, which is amoxillin for pets. She stayed overnight and we took her home the next morning.

Saturday night she seemed pretty bad. We gave her more oxygen but it only helped for a bit. We decided to see how she was the next day. Needless to say, she wasnt any better and my mum, who was staying with us, said she had seen her gasping in the night. So we did the only kind thing we could and took her to be put to sleep.

She was so good, as she always was. She took comfort from being held, stroked and kissed by Mummy and Papa. They kept us waiting quite a while, which I was annoyed about.

Eventually she was seen. The vet gave her a small injection of anaesthetic to send her unconscious, then the large needle administered the lethal dose to her heart, though she didnt feel it. We continued to love and stroke her as she drifted off to a much better place. Oh, how I cried.

The place seems so empty without Darling Sky, our beloved, beautiful rat daughter. She was warm, intelligent, affectionate and gentle. She generously licked and groomed us whenever we scritched and stroked her. She was inquisitive and sensitive. She loved us utterly.

Im sure we will always feel her presence keeping an eye on us and guarding us.

God Bless you Sky. You were one heck of a great ratty.
