Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Summer has gone to be an Angel

28 December 2005 ~ 00:09

We had a bit of an upset tonight. Summer seemed unwell and I assumed that it was because of her respiratory problems. However she was not nearly as bad as Sky got when she had laboured breathing. She was not gasping just breathing harder than a normal person would be which she has done for a while. We even put her in the oxygen tank and she just lay there and didn't struggle at all like Sky used to.

I began to suspect that it was not respiratory problems at all. I checked closely and she was very, very cold. She wouldn't eat and was hardly moving. I thought back to what the vet said last time about something on her kidney and began to suspect cancer, as this is exactly what had happened with other rats who had cancer. OK one day, very, very bad the next. She had seemed fairly OK on Christmas Day.

So we took her to the emergency vets which is run by the same vet we usually use luckily. We took a cab. The vet agreed with us that it was probably cancer on her kidney. He said it felt very weird, and they could operate to remove it but it was almost certain the other one wasn't working either. Maybe she had existed on just the one kidney for some time and it was finally exhausted. She had been drinking a lot and had lost weight.

We cried as she was injected with a sedative. She was a good girl and lay still for the final injection to put her to sleep. We had taken Autumn with us for moral support. Autum had in fact been laying next to her in the cage when we found her, with Summer resting her head on her sisiter. She will miss her.

God Bless and keep you little orange polar wombat, as we used to call you.
