Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

38-year-olds can be sexy too!

02 February 2003 ~ 02:11

People say that 30 is the new 20, and 40 is the new 30. I actually think that is true, and I take heart (in my increasing old age) that these days models in their thirties still regularly appear on the front covers of women's magazines. Yasmin Le Bon, for example, is only a couple of years younger than me but still makes as much money as ever modelling.

Twenty years ago, it'd be almost impossible to find a model over the age of 25 on the cover of said magazines. Why this should have been I cannot understand, because a 30-year-old woman rarely looks visibly different from a woman of 25. It's good that older women are finally getting credit where it is deserved. After all, most women do make an effort to look good, stay in shape and spend quite a bit of money on beauty products.

I remember reading with anger critics slagging off TV presenter Carol Vordeman when she appeared at a film festival in the south of France a couple of years ago. She was at the time 38 or 39, and wore a low-cut torquise mini-dress with a frill that went up at the side. It was a gorgeous dress; and she had a gorgeous figure. But the cynical old bags dared to criticise her and call her 'mutton dressed as lamb,' most likely were probably just exceedingly jealous of her.

Just because a woman reaches her late thirties, or forties even, it's no reason to let yourself go and think it's not worth making an effort. If you've still got a nice figure, why shouldn't you wear shorter skirts, low-cut tops, and go with the latest fashions? My 62-year-old mother had her belly button pierced last year, and she looks great.

Let's not confuse sexiness and trendiness with tartiness. Overkill is possible. The character, Kat Slater on "EastEnders" (British TV soap) dresses very young, but for some reason that I can't quite but my finger on, she looks slutty.

On the flip side, Kim Cattrall, from "Sex in the City," is 46, but she's still considered one of the show's glamorous stars. Madonna is still gracing Vogue in her mid forties.

So if you're no longer as young as you were, wear fitted and feminine rather than baggy clothes, look after your hair and wear a touch of lip gloss. And you never know, you may be helping to change a whole generation's attitude to the aging process.
