Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Bye bye Bumble Bee

29 September 2008 ~ 15:51

Today was a very sad day for us. Our bumblebee, our sweet liitle girl Sapphire had to leave us.

She had seemed unwell for a few days and this morning seemed uncoordinated, one eye half closed and she didn't want to eat. At least she looked like she wanted to but just couldn't tolerate food. We'd been giving her Metacam, a steriod anti-inflammatory that stimulates appetite, for a couple of days, and it helped at first. We still aren't 100% sure what was wrong with our darling because she's very big so it was hard for the vet to get a good listen to her chest. However, I suspect that like many of our rats, she had pneumonia.

In her old age she had become very licky and affectionate and we'll miss our love bug loads. She loved her food especially anything sweet. It's good that she'll be reunited with her sister Mary.

Sapphy's genes live on as she was mother at a young age to five baby rats, who all looked like her. That's good to know. I'm sure they're all as sweet-natured as she was.

Here's a picture of our baby looking very pretty as usual.
