Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Relaxing on the Riviera

07 May 2003 ~ 21:48

Wow, what a great holiday we just got back from!

Nightdragon and I, together with my mum, spent Saturday night, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in the South of France. Our base was Nice. The weather was terrificsunny and cloudless with not one drop of rain. The people were so friendly, even complimenting me on my French, which I think was hardly deserved seeing as their English is so superior to my French. We even had a shop assistant want to let us off the last few (euro) cents when we didn't quite have enough money to buy some perfume. You wouldn't get that in England!

We had a pleasant flight on British Airways and got there on time, only to be told that our hotel reservation had been cancelled! Fortunately we had proof that we had booked and paid (it was the travel agent's fault) and there was a spare triple room.

Sunday was spent on the beach, on the comfortable-as-beds sunloungers you rent for a few eurosworth it as the beach is quite pebbly. Mark went for a swim, and we all ended up partly tanned, partly burnt, despite using high factor sun cream.

On Monday we took a train to San Remo in Italy, where we had trouble ordering our lunch due to our lack of Italian. The waiting staff spoke hardly any English and little French, whereas in Nice, nearly everyone speaks great English. We also got lost when we took the wrong train back! But it was a lovely town which we enjoyed visiting.

On Tuesday, Mum and I went to Monaco, whilst Mark stayed behind in Nice to sunbathe some more. We visited the royal palace, home to Prince Rainier, and went to the animal park where we saw the cutest collection of critters, including an adorable little spotted pig, beautiful wallabies and a pair of ring tailed raccoons.

We are already planning a return trip in October and I hope the weather will be every bit as good as it was this time. There is still a lot left to see.
