Au revoir, Roxy rat 29 March 2010 ~ 22:11 Today we had to say good-bye to our beautiful, shy girl Roxy. She was no great age; in fact, she was exactly one year and three months old. Though she'd had some bowel problems for a few weeks, she took a turn for the worst on Sunday. We took her to the vets' as an emergency case. She seemed in pain, so they gave her a shot of morphine and kept her in overnight.This morning, they sedated Roxy in order to x-ray her, but couldn't really determine even then what the problem was. I think the reasonable assumption, given the bleeding, diarrhoea and constipation and the fact that she had lost weight, was that she had a bowel tumour. However, she was quite lively up until only an hour or so before we had to rush her to the vets'. Roxy was a very quiet and timid girl who loved collecting mini dog bones, making nests with paper and cuddling with her two cagemates, Breeze and Courcelles. She liked to sneak into Destiny's cage and steal her mini-bones. She was very vocal and loved the sound of her own squeaks. In fact, she was our little drama queen. Rats don't get very long and the unfairness of it is that half the time they don't even get their meagre two-year lifespan. I'd like to pay tribute to all my rats past and present.
