Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Meeting The Tamworth Two

04 August 2004 ~ 13:15

In England, in January 1998, two pigs escaped from an abattoir and went on the run for ten days. Their story gripped the nation with all the major newspapers vying to be the first to catch the two fugitives.

The swine were sister and brother, nicknamed Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Pig, and a cross between a Tamworth pig and a wild boar. They were eventually caught by The Daily Mirror and bought for a large undisclosed sum, so that they could be sent to live out their days in the comfort of an animal sanctuary.

On Monday, my Mum and I were lucky enough to meet the plucky porkers. We visited The South of England Rare Breeds Centre near Ashford, Kent. It was tricky to get to without a car, involving a bus, a train and another bus, then a mile-long walk along a little country road with no footpath. But it was a gorgeous sunny day and we picked blackberries on the way.

Due to the infrequency of the buses we didnt get nearly long enough there and missed the pig racing much to my disappointment. But the main thing is that we got to see The Tamworth Twonow much, much bigger than they were when they escapedalthough they didnt deign to wake up for us but carried on sleeping peacefully. We also met and stroked some tiny black piglets, calves, chicks, goat kids, sheep and bunnies.

It was a great day out and I am so pleased to have met these heroes among pigs!
