Perching here and gathering my thoughts ...

Dog day afternoon

19 January 2003 ~ 20:36

We had a nice day yesterday at our friends', Anne and Martin's, place. Like us, they used to keep rats as pets, and that's how we met. Unfortunately their last rat, a Topaz buck (male rat) called Rossi, died a week ago. But they also have a pet dog who is a lot of fun.

Fred is a yellow labrador about eighteen months old who was rescued from Battersea Dog's Home. He's a really huge dog who weighs seven-and-a-half stone (105 pounds). When you arrive he jumps up to greet you, full of enthusiasm and nearly knocks you clean off your feet.

Now Fred loves Mark because Mark loves to rough-house with him. Anne, Mark and I took him for a walk, and Mark held the lead and ran with him most of the way. We couldn't let him off because apparantly he likes to roll in dirt and comes home looking like a black or chocolate lab! He's so full of energy though, that when we got back, he was still up for a bout of wrestling with his buddy Mark. I swear, that hubby of mine sure has strength to match the dog's!

Fred's tail is a lethal weapon which he constantly wags with such force he could provide a household with all their electricity needs if you could somehow harness the force! Of course this means that anything on the coffee table (i.e. at dog height) usually gets knocked over, and on Saturday that happened to Martin's beer. Fred also likes to snatch things up and run off with them; Anne's cigarettes, Mark's woolly hat, a creme egg nothing is safe. But he's a lovely, gentle natured dog just full of mischief, and he certainly shows his love by smothering you in doggy kisses!

Anyway, we had a good time catching up with our friends as we hadn't seen them for a few months, and we were finally able to collect the kitchen chair they got us for Christmas. It's a small, folding chair with a leopard-print pattern that matches the zebra-stripe one we've already got.

The latest news on the scanner: We successfully installed it tonight and downloaded a few pictures. Thanks to cynedra for her lovely attempt to help. Phew, what a relief to have it up and working!
